Storm exposure in Galway

Atlantic-facing Galway was among the worst-hit counties when Storm Éowyn crossed Ireland in January 2025, with rural communities offline for days. Connacht's overhead network through bog, forestry and stone-wall townland remains the most outage-prone in the country.

What local installers actually deal with

Galway's one-off housing pattern means well pumps, septic pumps and long cable runs are the norm. Installers here routinely quote for well-pump surge loads and LPG or diesel storage sized for a multi-day outage, not an overnight one.

Towns and areas typically served include Tuam, Ballinasloe, Loughrea, Oranmore, Athenry, Clifden, Oughterard. Lead times matter: since Éowyn, popular kVA brackets have periodically gone on allocation, and autumn booking beats waiting for the first Status Red warning.

The rules that apply in every county

  • RECI-registered electrical work only. Electrical work connecting a standby generator to a premises - safe isolation and the changeover/ATS hookup - must be carried out by a RECI-registered electrical contractor. Never allow anyone to wire a generator into a distribution board without RECI registration.
  • No backfeeding. A generator must never be wired to feed power back onto the ESB Networks grid ("backfeeding"). It endangers line crews working on the assumption lines are dead and is illegal. Only a proper transfer switch installation prevents this.
  • The grid stays ESB Networks\’s job. ESB Networks owns and operates the distribution grid and is responsible for restoration after storm damage. A home generator is private plant: it supports your premises only and never substitutes for the network repair process. Outage and restoration status: ESB PowerCheck.
  • No grant to offset. There is no SEAI grant for standby or portable home generators. SEAI support schemes cover upgrades like heat pumps, insulation and solar PV - not backup power plant. Any directory or salesperson implying a generator grant is wrong.

Indicative installed cost in Galway

A permanently installed standby generator with an ATS or manual changeover falls in the indicative band EUR 5,000-15,000+ installed (ASSUMPTION - indicative, installer quotes vary). Quote drivers are unit size (kVA) and fuel, ATS vs manual changeover, groundworks and plinth, tank provision, and site access. Portable units run EUR 300-1,200 retail (portable class; does not include any wiring work) (ASSUMPTION - indicative retail range) but cannot safely power hardwired circuits without an electrician-installed changeover.
